A follow-up study of ex-pupils from a speech and language unit

Elizabeth Stone

Coventry Health Authority

Fifty-six young people who attended a speech and language unit between June 1976 and December 1987 were traced. Thirty-seven responded to a preliminary letter and were interviewed personally to gain quantitative information regarding their education and employ ment. A qualitative assessment was also attempted in order to gain insights into social adjustment. The young people were also asked whether they needed further speech therapy intervention and/or adult literacy/remedial help. Finally, they and/or their families were asked to consider the strengths and weaknesses of being placed in a Speech and Language unit at an earlier age.
