'Writing frames' for children with expressive language problems

Eva Grauberg

Dawn House School, Rainworth, Nottinghamshire

The article deals with one way of helping children with expressive language problems when they make their first attempts at 'free writing'. It is suggested that structure and creativity can be combined by using 'grammatical writing frames' within which the children can express some of their own ideas on specific topics. A group lesson is described, the advantages and dis advantages of the technique are discussed, and a summary of steps to be taken by the teacher is given. The appendix contains three examples of 'frames'.
