DOI: 10.1177/026565908800400102 Speaking and writing: young children's use of connectivesUniversity of Reading The investigation reported here seeks reasons for the frequent use of and in young children's writing. Comparisons between their speech and writing are reported, and further data from opportunities to write at length and from books written for children learning to read are also considered. Children at an early age were found to differentiate between speech and writing, and evidence is found which questions the value of the traditional language experience approach to the early stages of writing.
