Department of Clinical Communication Studies, City University and Newham Community Health Services NHS Trust The need for appropriate provision for 11-16 year-olds (secondary school pupils) with language and communication difficulties is increasingly appar ent. This paper discusses the needs of pupils and the characteristics of secondary schools, identified by a group of teachers and speech and language therapists. Their experience provides suggestions for specific aspects of guid ance and the content of professional development activities for practitioners in this level of education.
